Arthrogryposis, also known as arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), is a rare congenital disorder that is characterized by multiple joint contractures and can include muscle weakness and fibrosis. It is a non-progressive disease.
AMC is rare occurring in
1 out of 3,000
live births!
Bash was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), a rare condition causing stiff joints and weak muscles. After a series of successful arm surgeries, Bash is bendier than ever, but still lacks the strength to lift his own arms. Now Bash needs a mobile arm support so he can get more range of motion in his shoulders, arms and elbows and begin to build strength. Usually this is a cumbersome technology, made out of metal that has to be attached to a wheel chair or table. But Bash is not in a wheelchair, and needs something lightweight, that can go with him everywhere, so he can be like Matt Damon in Elysium.
Fortunately, there is a new technology, made possible by the advent of 3D printing, called a WREX (Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton) Device. It is a plastic exoskeleton “printed” out of lightweight materials that are then attached to a vest. Dubbed “Magic Arms” by another little girl with #AMC, the device is so light that he can wear it easily. It supports his body, and assists him in lifting his arms easily, taking away the weight of gravity making it easier to lift his arms while encouraging movement for his under-developed muscles. With his new Magic Arms, Bash will be able to explore an entire new range of motion in front of his face and torso, feed himself more easily, and interact with his world in exciting new ways.
We believe the Wilmington Robotic Exoskeleton (WREX) is the next step in Bash's journey to recovery. This will enable Bash to lift is arms, bend is elbows to play, write and draw more easily and feed himself. The WREX unit or as Bash calls it, his “Magic Arms” will help him explore his world. Because his deltoids and biceps are underdeveloped he needs more support, so the muscles can grow and strengthen through new pathways of use.
We need to raise about $10,000 to get the order filled and have it manufactured. Bash just started school. These Magic Arms will asisit him in everything he will want do to but can't because of his limited range of motion. This is the great thing about living in the future, we can take an idea and make it a reality with your help.
This is so much bigger that just Bash, this is a new technology that can improve the lives of thousands of children with AMC and similair conditions. Through social media, Facebook and Instagram we have had families contact us that want to get the device for their children too. But because there isn't enough clinical reserach the "Magic Arms" aren't covered by insurance. So Bash will get to be apart of the research to prove that this device is benefical for people with Arthrogryposis.
It’s truly amazing the hope and excitement we are raising. But there is no time to wait. Bash needs his “Magic Arms”.
